Ruben Meerman, an ABC science presenter, visited Broughton to meet Year 7 and 8 students.
In his presentations he challenged students with the question ‘when you exercise and lose weight, where did that weight go?’. His research into this question showed that most doctors, health professionals and personal trainers got the answer wrong! The most common answer given was that ‘it burns into energy/heat’, and some thought that the weight came out with their faeces. Ruben, however, shows that the lost weight is lost as we breathe - it’s the carbon in the carbon dioxide we breathe out. Alarmingly he showed students that a single take-away meal could take them over 24 hours of resting breathing rates to remove all that carbon!
Ruben gave two great shows to our students - presenting them with evidence of different types of gases (water vapour, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, helium etc) and how they behave differently. He also showed off some amazing lasers, infra-red cameras, liquid nitrogen,
